Ye Li immediately voiced her suspicion.
“They knew each other?” Le Jun was shocked as well.
Yet when they had discussed Wen Xue’s case earlier, Qi Yezhou hadn’t uttered a single word from start to finish, acting completely detached and ignorant of it all.
“Not only did they know each other, but they were quite close,” Ye Li said with certainty.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have made a promise to attend Qing University together!
Le Jun caught on as well. “Then why did he keep it hidden?”
Since their relationship ran so deep, he might have known all along that this ghost domain was tied to Wen Xue. Yet he hadn’t breathed a word—why?
Ye Li said, “Don’t forget, he was the first to point out that the headcount was wrong, and he was the one who brought up the timing of when they woke up.”
Le Jun’s eyes lit up. “Are you saying he intentionally guided us to find Yi Lin and the others? Could his goal be to avenge Wen Xue?”
After all, Yi Lin and the other two were the main culprits behind Wen Xue’s death. Once they entered this building, their deaths had been horrifyingly gruesome.
“But if that’s the case, why did Luo Jiajia die? And why are you and I trapped here, too?”
Le Jun was baffled. Prior to this, he hadn’t known Wen Xue at all.
“I don’t know.” Ye Li hadn’t figured that out either.
Perhaps the answers were recorded in the torn pages of the diary.
Ye Li lightly traced the jagged paper stubs left behind in the diary, pondering silently.
The tear marks weren’t straight; in fact, they were quite ragged.
She couldn’t tell whether Wen Xue had torn them out herself or if someone else had.
Could it be that they documented the entire ordeal of her bullying?
As Ye Li was turning this over in her mind, a sudden, overpowering wave of dizziness struck, forcing her to shut her eyes in discomfort.
Yet when she opened them again, the scene before her had changed completely.
She was still in the classroom.
But now, the room was brightly lit and bustling with people, just like during break time on an ordinary day.
Yet none of the students around her seemed to notice her presence, treating her entirely like thin air.
Then, amidst the crowd, she spotted Yi Lin and Luo Jiajia...
...
Meanwhile, Le Jun only saw Ye Li suddenly close her eyes and go limp, frightening him into quickly wrapping his arms around her to keep her from falling.
“Ningning? Ningning? What’s wrong? Wake up...”
Yet no matter how he called out, the girl kept her eyes firmly shut, giving no response.
A sheen of cold sweat broke out on Le Jun’s forehead. Extending a slightly trembling finger, he checked under her nose...
Thank goodness, she was breathing!
Although he had no idea why she had suddenly fallen unconscious, as long as she was alive, that was what mattered.
What should he do now?
Le Jun felt as if he had lost his anchor, his heart thumping wildly with anxiety.
After some thought, he decided to stick to their original plan and go to the rooftop.
Le Jun slipped the diary into the girl’s backpack, carefully hoisted her onto his back, and headed straight out of the classroom.
By the time he reached the stairwell, the “mud figures” below had already begun clawing their way up the steps, nearly reaching the sixth floor.
As if sensing the presence of the living, the mud figures bared their teeth and snarled, their sharp fangs clicking loudly together.
Watching these grotesque things, Le Jun felt pure panic seize his chest, the hair on the back of his neck standing on end.
Not daring to linger, he hurried up the stairs.
The girl on his back was light; carrying her up the steps took little effort at all. Softly draped against him, she became his sole motivation to keep pushing forward.
The iron door leading to the rooftop was still locked shut.
Reaching behind, Le Jun pulled the broken half-javelin from the girl’s backpack and skillfully pried open the lock.
Sliding the bolt and pushing the door open, he carried the girl out onto the rooftop.
But the rooftop remained empty and desolate, with only the night wind whimpering softly in the pitch-black darkness.
Qi Yezhou wasn’t here!
