“Ah—!”
The cell door slammed shut with a heavy crash, and the child’s piercing scream instantly echoed down the corridor.
The immature voice was shrill and high-pitched, steeped in profound terror and helplessness, wrenching the heart of anyone who heard it.
Whether someone had finally noticed something amiss and triggered the alarm or for some other reason, a shrill siren immediately began to wail.
Meanwhile, inside the cell, half of the Abomination’s body had already leaned out of the bathroom. Its sharp talons gripped the doorframe while its long tongue remained wrapped tightly around its prey’s neck, dragging her back with terrifying speed.
Ye Li had been dragged to the floor. She flailed her hands frantically, clawing at anything within reach.
With the alarm blaring, the guards would arrive shortly; she had to find a way to stall for time and wait for rescue.
As long as her vitals weren't struck to kill her instantly, even if the monster devoured her limbs, she could ultimately survive thanks to her tenacious self-healing ability.
Yet luck was clearly not on Ye Li’s side.
After desperate struggling, all she managed to grab were a torn bedsheet and a slipper, and she had already been dragged right to the bathroom doorway.
Having been wounded by Ye Li earlier, the Abomination was clearly somewhat wary. Bracing its demonic claws firmly against the doorframe, it shoved its massive frame completely out of the bathroom. Its remaining eye glared viciously at the prey beneath its feet, rancid, foul-smelling drool dripping in strings from its jaws.
Choked by the fleshy tongue, Ye Li’s face was flushed crimson. Unable to breathe, veins bulged across her forehead from sheer agony.
Seeing the monster lean down and reach its claws out toward her, a fierce glint flashed through her bloodshot eyes.
Tightening her core, she bent her knees and kicked upward with all her might, driving her foot straight into the Abomination’s bloated chin.
The kick was so sudden and explosive that the Abomination was caught completely off guard. The blow landed squarely, snapping its jaws shut and forcing its serrated fangs into an intimate collision with its own tongue.
“Roar—!”
The Abomination howled in agonizing pain. Its wounded tongue released its prey and whipped back down its throat. Flushed with humiliated rage, it lashed out with a flying kick at the culprit.
Its heavy combat boot slammed violently into Ye Li’s flank, sending her tumbling across the floor twice.
Ye Li curled up miserably, but ignoring the searing ache in her abdomen, she gasped greedily for air.
Fresh air rushed into her lungs, scraping against her bruised trachea with a burning pain. It triggered a violent coughing fit, spraying the floor with blood that welled up from her throat.
Thwarted again and again, the Abomination finally went berserk.
Enraged, it marched toward its prey, reached down, grabbed her by the ankle, hoisted her upside down with effortless ease, and slammed her violently across the room.
Ye Li crashed hard onto the floor, dazed and disoriented. Her entire body felt as though it had shattered, and one of her legs dislocated on impact.
She struggled to lift her eyelids, attempting to crawl forward on her elbows, only for the advancing Abomination to seize her frail arm and lift her up once more.
Crack!
“Ah—!”
With a crisp snap of bone, Ye Li couldn't suppress a shrill scream of agony.
The Abomination had snapped her arm in two with raw brute force.
Gritting her teeth against the blinding pain, Ye Li raised her remaining good arm and swung the slipper she had been clutching all along, slapping the monster’s hideous, grotesque face right across the cheek with the sole.
Smack!
The damage was negligible, but the insult was astronomical.
“Roar—!”
The Abomination split its maw wide and roared in her face, spraying foul-smelling slime all over her head and body, nearly nauseating her to death on the spot.
“Your breath fucking stinks!” Ye Li jammed the slipper straight into its open maw.
In response, its claw clamped down viciously around her other arm...
Crack!
Both arms were broken!
Darkness encroached upon Ye Li’s vision from the sheer agony. Hovering on the verge of unconsciousness, she no longer had any strength left to resist.
The Abomination opened its bloody maw, exposing rows of razor-sharp fangs, and lunged toward her vulnerable neck to deliver the fatal blow...
Right at that moment, the cell door slid open with a boom.
Bang! A gunshot rang out.
Ye Li felt something whiz past her ear before sinking into the Abomination’s gaping mouth with a squelch.
Turgid, black blood instantly sprayed out. The Abomination wailed in torment, its sole remaining blood-red eye blazing with ferocious light.
Hurling its prey aside, it spun around and lunged at the intruder.
Gao Wen, Captain of the Guard, showed not the slightest hint of fear.
Holstering her gun, her fair hand instantly shifted into a gleaming silver blade. She leaped into the air, her high black ponytail slicing a crisp arc through the space.
Her moves were devoid of flourish, brutally efficient and ruthlessly precise. With a single fluid slash, she cleaved clean through the Abomination’s lunging claw.
A roundhouse kick followed by a back kick—Gao Wen drove the wounded monster straight to the floor. Before it could scramble up, she stepped in with another blade slash, severing its other claw.
The entire sequence was clean, seamless, and executed without missing a beat.
The Abomination collapsed to the ground, wheezing in agony, seemingly stripped of all capacity to resist.
Recognizing its identity from the shredded uniform, Gao Wen’s expression darkened.
An Abomination emerging from within the Guard—she knew those old fossils would bring up the same old arguments again and nag incessantly!
Averting her gaze, she turned to look at Ye Li lying battered and blood-soaked on the floor, her eyes brimming with disdain.
In the next second, as if she had eyes in the back of her head, her blade hand slashed down with pinpoint precision at the fleshy tongue stealthily darting toward her from behind.
Squelch!
As a severed chunk of the tongue dropped to the floor, the Abomination thrashed and wailed in agony.
Immediately afterward, a squad of guards swarmed in, moving to bind and restrain the monster.
Duoduo rushed in behind them.
She fell to her knees in front of Ye Li. Staring at her sister covered in gruesome wounds, the little girl was at a total loss, able only to weep helplessly.
“Trash will always be trash—completely useless!” Gao Wen looked down at the two figures, her cool, striking face filled with detachment and mockery.
Paralyzed on the ground, Ye ‘Trash’ Li curled the corner of her lips indifferently, tilted her head, and spat out a mouthful of bloody foam with a ptui.
Beside her, Duoduo spread her little arms protectively in front of her sister, glaring furiously at the wicked woman through teary eyes, refusing to let her bully her sister.
Gao Wen sneered, averting her eyes in contempt.
“Captain, should we take this Mutant to the infirmary?” Having secured the Abomination, a guard stepped forward to ask.
“She can heal on her own; there’s no need to waste manpower or medicine,” Gao Wen replied coldly. “These two have come into contact with an Abomination. Quarantine this cell first. No one is to enter without my direct orders!”
“Understood!” the guard acknowledged.
Before long, the squad dragged the Abomination away and cleared out of the cell.
The cell door slid shut once more, leaving behind a floor strewn with filthy wreckage and two frail figures, one large and one small.
Exhausted in body and mind, Ye Li mustered the last dregs of her strength to comfort the child sobbing beside her in a soft whisper.
“Don't cry. I'm fine... A good sleep is all I need... Be good and don't make a fuss, or I'll smack you...”
Her voice trailed off slower and slower until her eyes closed in exhaustion, plunging into total darkness...
Duoduo obediently pressed her lips tight, doing her best not to cry or make any noise.
After a moment, she reached out her little hand, pressed it gently against her sister’s forehead, closed her eyes, and prayed with utmost reverence in her heart.
She wanted her sister to get better!
To get better quickly!
