Cen Yao withdrew her gaze.
“After leaving the laboratory yesterday, we did run into some more monsters.”
“Some” was clearly an understatement.
In truth, not long after they left the laboratory, a violent tremor suddenly shook the ground.
Several deep cracks split across the already scorched and blackened streets.
The next moment, swarms of monsters crawled out from the underground.
Some had insect-like appendages but bore human torsos on their backs.
Others had no legs, their lower bodies sprouting dozens of tentacles that slithered along the ground like centipedes.
Still others had their bodies completely buried in the soil, exposing only mouths filled with sharp fangs, waiting to pounce from the earth when they drew close.
The sky did not remain quiet for long either.
Massive dark shadows flew across the ruins.
These creatures had bat-like wings, but their wings were densely covered in eyes.
The eyes swiveled constantly as they flew, their pupils locking onto Cen Yao and Xie Zhouxing on the ground.
Xie Zhouxing was already on the broomstick by then, while Cen Yao had spread her wings, flying alongside him.
When the first wave of flying monsters swooped down, before Xie Zhouxing could even warn her, a piercing screech suddenly erupted overhead.
“Cen Yao, watch out above!”
“No need to remind me,” Cen Yao said, raising her hand.
Three fireballs materialized in front of her at the same time.
Orange-red flames crackled on the surface of the fireballs. Once launched, instead of colliding directly with the monsters, they split apart in midair.
One became three, three became nine.
In a split second, a dense cluster of fireballs surged forward like a shower of burning meteors, hurtling toward the diving monsters.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Firebursts erupted one after another across the sky.
The flying monsters were engulfed in flames, the eyes on their wings popping one by one in the intense heat, sending blackened remains falling from midair.
Cen Yao flapped her wings, weaving gracefully through the bursts of fire.
She raised her finger, and flames condensed in her palm, shaping into a fire dragon dozens of meters long.
The fire dragon reared its head and roared, its body composed of surging flames, the edges of its scales burning with a dazzling golden light.
It crashed headfirst into the swarm of monsters, its massive body coiling and sweeping them out of the sky.
The fire dragon opened its maw, spewing a pillar of scorching fire.
Before the airborne monsters could even shriek, they were reduced to ashes within the pillar of fire.
Xie Zhouxing flew past on his broomstick, his cheeks burning from the intense heatwave.
“Cen Yao!”
“Take it easy! Don't let it go to your head!”
“Don't worry,” Cen Yao's voice echoed from the other side of the flames.
“They can't touch you anyway.” She flicked her finger.
The fire dragon's tail whipped violently through the air, swatting away several flying monsters that tried to approach Xie Zhouxing.
“Just stay put on your broomstick.”
“I'll be done cleaning them up in a moment.”
The moment she finished speaking, the last batch of flying monsters was smashed into a sky full of sparks by the fire dragon.
The charred remains rained down like dumplings into a pot.
The monster horde chasing them below instantly bore the brunt of the fallout.
A charred corpse crashed onto the back of a four-legged monster, sending it tumbling and knocking down two fanged aberrations beside it.
Looking at the chaos below, Cen Yao suddenly found this method quite effective.
She reversed her direction, chasing after the monsters that were fleeing in panic.
“Why are you running?”
She hovered in midair, her wings unfurled, with flames swirling around her.
“Didn't you start this chase?” The monsters, of course, could not answer; they only knew how to run.
But Cen Yao had already gotten carried away by the thrill of the fight.
The moment the fire dragon dispersed, she raised her hand to summon a phoenix made of frost.
The frost phoenix spread its wings, its feathers composed of sharp ice crystals, as freezing air cascaded down from its wings.
It dived from the sky, its talons gripping a colossal monster. Ice instantly spread from the monster's head to its feet.
The monster was frozen into a twisted ice sculpture.
The frost phoenix circled once in the air and let out a long cry.
The ice sculpture shattered with a loud bang, scattering fragments all over the ground.
Before Cen Yao could even catch her breath, the ground suddenly split open, and a fleshy pillar covered in eyes burst out.
Cen Yao raised her hand and unleashed a bolt of lightning.
Violet-blue electricity crashed down from the sky, the lightning condensing into the shape of a Qilin in midair.
It charged down, treading on thunder. The moment its four hooves touched the ground, the entire ruin was illuminated by the electric glare.
The Qilin bit down hard on the fleshy pillar monster.
Lightning surged all the way down its body.
Amidst the crackling sounds, the eyes on the monster popped simultaneously, and charred chunks of flesh splattered everywhere from the electrical shock.
Xie Zhouxing flew past on his broomstick. Hearing the successive explosions, he couldn't help but shrink his neck.
“My dear ancestor!”
“I beg of you, take it easy! Don't do anything rash!”
“I'm not being rash,” Cen Yao answered seriously, standing amidst the crackling lightning.
The next second, a massive white lotus bloomed in front of her.
The lotus was formed from pure light elements, its petals layered upon each other, with a gentle golden flame burning at its center.
It rotated slowly, and in the next instant, all its petals unfurled.
Countless beams of light shot out from the heart of the flower like an inverted meteor shower, precisely piercing the monsters on the ground.
The monsters hit by the light beams did not bleed; instead, their bodies lit up from within, as if a miniature sun had exploded inside their flesh.
Then, their entire bodies silently dissolved into ashes.
Standing in the center of the light lotus, Cen Yao's long hair and the hem of her robe fluttered in the magic power. Her eyes were cool and her expression focused.
Wherever the light reached, all impurities were utterly eradicated.
The monsters in the sky began to panic, and those on the ground started to flee.
They scattered in all directions, some even burrowing back into the earth to escape Cen Yao's sight.
But Cen Yao had no intention of letting them off so easily.
Flames spread beneath her feet, forming a scorching bridge.
She flew across the bridge of fire, raising her hand to condense a spear made entirely of frost, which she threw fiercely toward the ground.
The ice spear pierced the earth, and freezing air exploded underground.
Dozens of monsters hiding in the soil were instantly frozen solid. Ice spread out from the cracks, turning the entire street into a landscape of white frost.
Immediately after, Cen Yao snapped her fingers.
The ice shattered with a deafening blast.
The black monster corpses were blown into fragments along with it.
To the monsters, this scene conveyed only one thing:
A god!
Where did this ancestor come from?!
Yet Cen Yao did not stop.
As she continued to cast magic, her casting speed grew faster and faster, and her control over the various elements became increasingly proficient.
Flames were no longer limited to fireballs; they could condense into fire dragons, transform into whips, or spread into a sea of fire.
Frost was no longer just ice arrows; it could transform into a phoenix, seal the ground, or condense into massive arrays of ice blades in midair.
Lightning could turn into a Qilin or weave into a giant electric net, trapping swarms of monsters within.
The light element acted like the sharpest judge—seemingly gentle, yet capable of piercing through all impurities.
The more Cen Yao fought, the smoother her movements became. Originally, the monsters had been chasing her.
Before long, it became her chasing the monsters.
When a three-legged monster hid in the ruins, Cen Yao used flames to blow the entire pile of debris away.
When a swarm of flying monsters tried to escape high into the sky, Cen Yao summoned a massive wall of light, bouncing them all back.
When monsters suddenly burst out from underground, Cen Yao froze the ground directly before blasting them out of the soil with lightning.
She even began to experiment with combining different elements.
